Royal Ballet and Opera

About the Royal Ballet and Opera

The Royal Ballet and Opera is the home of world-class opera and ballet. We are a cultural powerhouse, bringing together two world-class performing companies, The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet, in one of the UK’s leading arts institutions, supported by a cast of more than 3,000 employees including technical staff, creatives, and freelancers.

Based primarily at the Royal Opera House in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, with production and logistics sites in Thurrock and Aberdare, our work is enjoyed by audiences in our two theatres and globally through our streaming platform, cinema Season and company tours.

Our work in schools and communities up and down the country is driven by our curriculum linked programmes, specially designed to inspire creativity, widen access to the arts and diversify the future of opera and ballet. Children and teachers in thousands of schools across the country, who might otherwise not have access to the arts, will be offered opportunities, free specialist training and resources to inspire, educate and engage them in dance, music, and design.

Our work in schools sits alongside industry-leading talent development projects, regional partnerships, our Young RBO scheme, and a raft of daytime events, family activities, tours, exhibitions, and concerts in our Covent Garden home.

See what's on at the Royal Opera House

Whether you're new to ballet and opera or you've loved them all your life, we have something for you on our stages.

Dozens of dancers dressed in colourful striped clothing and bonnets dance around a maypole, holding on to the red, green and white ribbons that flow down from the top of the pole. A ballet dancer wearing a pink and white corseted dress, white tights and ballet slippers stands on a wooden barrel, holding on to the pole. The stage background is set with painted rural scenery of trees and haystacks.

See what's on in cinemas

Since 2008, our Cinema programme has brought over 120 opera and ballet broadcasts to audiences across the globe. It now reaches more than 1,500 cinemas from the UK to New Zealand, bringing the best of our resident companies to the big screen.

Tuuli Takala is performing as The Queen of The Night in The Royal Opera’s production of The Magic Flute. She stands in the centre of the stage with their arms spread outwards. The mesh from her long black ballgown draped out from her wrists. The stage behind her is set in blue and black brushstrokes with white dots making up the constellation of stars.
