Biography

British conductor Alexander Soddy was born in Oxford and educated at the Royal Academy of Music and Cambridge University. From 2016–2022, Soddy served as General Music Director of the National Theatre Mannheim where he specialised in the core German and Italian repertoire and premiered a new production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. He is a regular guest at orchestras and opera houses worldwide including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Vienna State Opera and Berlin State Opera. Other appearances include the Opéra de Paris, Bavarian State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Frankfurt Opera and Tokyo’s Nikikai Opera Foundation. 2024/25 Season highlights include: The Royal Opera (Fidelio), Berlin State Opera (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Fin de partie, Il trovatore), Metropolitan Opera (La bohème, Aida), Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Salome), Hamburg State Opera (Salome) and concerts with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, the Bournemouth Symphony and the Netherlands Philharmonic. Previous engagements for The Royal Opera include Salome, Tannhäuser and Così fan tutte.
