Biography

Alexandra Byrne trained as an architect at Bristol University before studying Theatre Design on the Motley Course at the English National Opera under Margaret Harris. She works extensively in television and theatre, both as a set and costume designer. Her television credits include Roger Michell’s Persuasion (BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design) and The Buddha of Suburbia (BAFTA nomination, RTS award). In theatre, her credits include Some Americans Abroad (RSC, Lincoln Centre; Tony nomination for Best Set Design). Following on from her work in theatre, Alexandra designed the costumes for Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, for which she gained her first Oscar nomination. Other credits include Phantom of the Opera, Sleuth, The Garden of Eden, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (Oscar-winning), Finding Neverland (Oscar nomination), Thor, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Mary Queen of Scots (Oscar nomination) and Emma, among many others. Most recently Alexandra designed the costumes for Empire of Light, directed by Sam Mendes.
