Biography

Born in the UK, Allan Clayton studied at St John’s College, Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. His awards include a Borletti-Buitoni Fellowship, the 2018 RPS Singer Award and an MBE in 2021. Previous engagements for The Royal Opera include the title roles in Jephtha and Peter Grimes, Ferrando (Così fan tutte), David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), H.K. Gruber’s Frankenstein and Angel 3/John (Written on Skin). Recent engagements elsewhere include Peter Grimes (Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid), the title role in Brett Dean’s Hamlet (Bayerische Staatsoper, Metropolitan Opera, Opera Australia), a role he also created in the opera’s 2017 world premiere, and Winterreise (Australia tour, Barbican). He has given song recitals and concerts at the Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berliner Philharmoniker and Park Avenue Armory. Engagements for 2024/25 include Peter Grimes in Rome, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius in Köln and returns to the Aldeburgh Festival and the BBC Proms.
