First Artist of The Royal Ballet

Biography

Australian dancer Amelia Townsend is a First Artist of The Royal Ballet. She joined The Royal Ballet’s Aud Jebsen Young Dancers Programme from the start of the 2018/19 Season and was promoted to Artist in 2019 and First Artist in 2023.

Townsend began her training at the Annette Roselli Dance Academy in Brisbane. She went on to train at The Australian Ballet School in Melbourne and then joined The Royal Ballet School in 2015. During her time at the school Townsend performed Ashton’s Swan Lake pas de quatre at the Assemblée Internationale in Toronto, Canada. Other highlights include performing in the opera Iris as well as Concerto, Les Sylphides and Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty

Professional engagements while a student include dancing with The Royal Ballet in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Sylvia, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Manon and Swan Lake

With the Company, her roles include Courtesan (Manon), Juliet's Friend (Romeo and Juliet), Spanish and Mirliton (The Nutcracker), Cygnet (Swan Lake), roles in Anemoi, Corybantic Games, Light of Passage, Everyone Keeps Me, The Statement and The Weathering. She had created roles in Joshua Junker's Never Known and Joseph Toonga's See Us!!.
