Benoît Jacquot

French director Benoît Jacquot made his Royal Opera debut in 2004 directing Werther. 

Jacquot began his career as an assistant director in films by Marguerite Duras, including Nathalie Granger (1972) and India Song (1975). He began his writing and directing career with L’Assassin musicien (1976) and has since gone on to direct more than forty films, including Les Ailes de la colombe (1981), La Désenchantée (1990), La Fille seule (1995), L’École de la chair (1998), Pas de scandale (1999), Sade (2000), Adolphe (2002), Villa Amalia (2009), Les Adieux à la reine (2012), 3 Coeurs (2014) Journal d’une femme de chambre (2015), Gentleman Rissient (2016), Never Ever (2016), Eva (2018) and Casanova, Last Love (2019). Les Adieux à la reine opened the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, and 3 Coeurs competed for the Golden Lion at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. 

Jacquot’s work in opera includes La traviata for Paris Opéra and a film version of Tosca starring Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna and conducted by Antonio Pappano. He has directed television documentaries on figures including Jacques Lacan, Merce Cunningham and Duras.
