Biography

Catherine Carby has appeared regularly with companies in her native Australia, including Opera Australia (most recently as Gertrude in Brett Dean’s Hamlet), Opera Queensland, National Opera of Canberra, Pinchgut Opera, Victoria State Opera and West Australian Opera. Engagements elsewhere have included performances with English National Opera, Buxton Festival Opera, English Touring Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Scottish Opera, Festival de Radio France Montpellier Occitaine, Teatro São Carlos, Lisbon and Teatro Real, Madrid. For The Royal Ballet, she has appeared as Katharina Schratt in Mayerling (available on Opus Arte). Appearances for The Royal Opera include Les contes d’Hoffmann (available on Sony) and La traviata and Die Walküre (both available on Opus Arte). Additional discography includes the BBC Music Magazine Award-winning recordings of Arnold’s The Dancing Master and Lampe’s The Dragon of Wantley (Resonus Classics), The Love for Three Oranges (Chandos), Der Rosenkavalier (Opera Australia CD/DVD); and Verdi’s Requiem
(Nimbus). 2024/25 highlights include Gertrud (Hansel and Gretel) for The Royal Opera.
