Biography

Born in Frankfurt, he studied philosophy, German literature and theatre at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, Munich, and theatre and opera directing at the Munich Hochschule. For The Royal Opera he has directed Die Frau ohne Schatten (also La Scala, Milan), Dialogues des Carmélites and Jenůfa (Olivier Award for Best New Production). Elsewhere he has directed The Makropulos Affair (Staatsoper unter den Linden), Le nozze di Figaro (La Scala, Milan), the world premiere of Il Viaggio, Dante by Pascal Dusapin and  Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Samson (Aix-en-Provence Festival), Czernowin’s Heart Chamber (Deutsche Oper Berlin), Furrer’s Violetter Schnee, Juliette and Chowanschtschina (Staatsoper Berlin), Jarrell’s Bérénice, Jephtha, La bohème and Rigoletto (Paris Opera), Elektra, Die lustige Witwe, Rodelinda, Pelléas et Mélisande and Dialogues des Carmélites (Frankfurt Opera), La clemenza di Tito (Glyndebourne Festival), Saul (Theater an der Wien), Der fliegender Holländer (Bayreuth Festival), Rodelinda (Teatro Real, Madrid), Der Ring des Nibelungen (Hamburg State Opera), Salome (Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bolshoi Theatre), Mozart’s Da Ponte operas (Salzburg Festival), Lohengrin (Milan), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Semperoper Dresden), Semele (Bayerische Staatsoper) and Turandot (Vienna State Opera).
