Eun Sun Kim studied composition and conducting in her hometown of Seoul, South Korea, before continuing her studies in Stuttgart. After graduation, she was awarded the First Prize in the International Jesús López Cobos Opera Conducting Competition at Teatro Real, Madrid. Notable orchestral engagements include appearances with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Gothenburg Symphony and Seoul Philharmonic. North American appearances include with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Seattle Symphony and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In 2021, she was appointed Music Director of San Francisco Opera, there she has conducted Dialogues des Carmélites, La traviata, Fidelio, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and the world premiere of John Adams’ Antony and Cleopatra. Recent productions elsewhere include La bohème at La Scala, Milan and Vienna State Opera, a staged Verdi Requiem at Dutch National Opera, Carmen at Zurich Opera and Hänsel und Gretel at Bayerische Staatsoper. 2024/25 engagements include Un ballo in maschera, Tristan und Isolde and Idomeneo (SFO), Simon Boccanegra (Staatsoper Berlin), and appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, Boston Symphony and Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid.
