Biography

German director Jan Philipp Gloger studied applied theatre studies in Giessen with Heiner Göbbels and directing at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Since 2007 he has worked as a theatre director at theatres including Deutsches Theater Berlin, Schaubühne Berlin, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and Bayerische Staatsoper, and has directed for various festivals. Since 2018, he has been the Artistic Director of Drama at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. In 2025, he will take up the position of Artistic Director at the Volkstheater in Vienna. Opera engagements include Le nozze di Figaro (Zurich Opera), Die Dubarry (Volksoper Vienna), Un ballo in maschera (Oper Cologne), Tancredi (Bregenz Festival), Alcina and Simon Boccanegra (Semperoper Dresden), Idomeneo and Betulia Liberata (Oper Frankfurt), Der Rosenkavalier and Die Florentinische Tragödie/Gianni Schicchi (Dutch National Opera) and various works for Zurich Opera including Faust, Il turco in Italia and Die Csardasfürstin. Recent theatre engagements include directing Die Nebenwirkungen (Burgtheater Vienna). He made his debut with The Royal Opera in the 2016/17 Season with Così fan tutte, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination.
