Biography

John Tomlinson sings at opera houses worldwide and has appeared at the Bayreuth, Aix-en-Provence, Glyndebourne and Salzburg festivals. His repertory includes the Dutchman, Heinrich der Vogler, Wotan/Wanderer, Hans Sachs, King Marke, Gurnemanz, Baron Ochs, Sarastro, Schoenberg’s Moses, Philip II, Grand Inquisitor, Fiesco, Méphistophélès, Duke Bluebeard, Boris Godunov, Boris Ismailov (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Claggart and General (The Gambler). He created Green Knight (Gawain) and the Minotaur (The Minotaur) for Harrison Birtwistle. He has made many recordings. He was made a CBE in 1997 and was awarded a knighthood in 2005. Recent appearances include Boris Ismailov, Ivan Iakovlevitch/Clerk/Doctor in The Nose, Varlaam and Tirésias in Oedipe (The Royal Opera), Doctor Carlos Conde in The Exterminating Angel (The Royal Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival), Ghost of Old Hamlet in Dean’s Hamlet (Glyndebourne), Priest-King in Babylon (Berlin Staatsoper) and Moses in Moses und Aron (Semperoper Dresden). Engagements for 2024/25 include returns to The Royal Opera and Glyndebourne Festival.
