Biography

Born in Heidelberg, Katharina John has worked as a dramaturg since 1995. She was head of the opera department at the Trier and Augsburg theatres and Deputy Chief Dramaturge at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She has worked with directors including Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, Sam Brown, Lorenzo Fioroni, Jan Philipp Gloger, Jürgen Gosch, Jasmina Hadžiahmetović, Patrick Kinmonth, Andreas Kriegenburg, Alexander von Pfeil, David Pountney, Christoph Schlingensief, Roland Schwab and Philipp Stölzl as well as choreographers Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss, Mario Schröder, Marguerite Donlon and Johann Kresnik. She has conceived interdisciplinary events, including a Zemlinsky Symposium (Deutsche Oper Berlin). Her dramaturgical work includes the world premieres of Marijn Simons’s chamber opera Lachesis and Michael Obst’s Unter dem Gletscher, as well as of the EU-cofounded international opera project CrossOpera (world premiere) in cooperation with the Teatro Comunale di Modena and the Serbian National Theater Novi Sad.
