Born in Scotland, he trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio. An inaugural Harewood Artist for English National Opera, he has sung many roles there, most recently making his role debut as Siegmund (The Valkyrie). He is a regular guest at UK companies including the Glyndebourne Festival, Grange Park Opera, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera and Opera North. Elsewhere he has sung at the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Opéra de Lyon, Seattle Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Teatro Real, Madrid and Dutch National Opera. Recent highlights include his Staatsoper Berlin debut as Albert (Vec Makropulous), Loge (Das Rheingold) at La Monnaie, Brussels, Edmundo, Marquès de Nobile (The Exterminating Angel) at Paris Opera and Laca (Jenůfa) with the London Symphony Orchestra under Simon Rattle. Engagements for 2024/25 include the title role in a new production of Peter Grimes for WNO, the title role in a new production of The Excursions of Mr Broucek for the Brno Janáček Festival, Boris (Kat'a Kabanova) at the Glyndebourne Festival and Bothwell (Thea Musgrave's Mary Queen of Scots) at ENO.
