Biography

Rebecca Afonwy-Jones began her career as a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist and later joined Welsh National Opera as an Associate Artist. Other companies with whom she has worked include English Touring Opera, Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Opera North and Festival Opera, New Zealand. Recent engagements have included Marta in Iolanta for IfOpera, Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9 at the Barbican, Messiah on tour with Norwegian Wind Ensemble (also recorded) and her BBC Proms debut singing Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Recordings include Kerstin in Joseph Phibbs’ Juliana and Hugh Wood’s Beginnings: Three Early Songs (both on Resonus Classics). Her 2024/2025 season engagements include Dama in Macbeth for Mid Wales Opera, Wellgunde in Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung and Waltraute in Die Walküre for cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen at Longborough Festival Opera and Maurya in Riders to the Sea for OperaUpClose. She makes her debut with The Royal Opera in the 2024/25 Season as Susie (A Quiet Place).
