Biography

From Canada, Robert Carsen directs, designs and lights plays, musicals and operas worldwide. Recent productions include Jedermann, La clemenza di Tito (Whitsun Festival) and Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno for the Salzburg Festival, Aida for The Royal Opera, Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex for the Greek Theatre at Siracuse, Werther for Baden-Baden, Peter Grimes for La Scala, Milan, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria in Florence, Janáček’s Osud in Brno, Idomeneo in Madrid, Rome and Copenhagen and the world premieres of Glanert’s operas Jüdin von Toledo in Dresden and Oceane for Deutsche Oper Berlin. Past highlights include Pagliacci/Cavalleria rusticana in Amsterdam, Giulio Cesare for La Scala, Milan, Arabella in Zurich, Der Rosenkavalier and Falstaff for The Royal Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, and Der Ring des Nibelungen in Cologne, Venice, Shanghai, Barcelona and Madrid. Musicals include The Beautiful Game, Sunset Boulevard, Cabaret, Candide, My Fair Lady and Singin’ in the Rain. Additional engagements include Shakespeare’s The Tempest for the Comédie Française and numerous productions for Paris Opera.
