He studied at Magdalen College Oxford and at the GSMD with David Pollard. For The Royal Opera, roles include Schaunard (La bohème), Ned Keene (Peter Grimes) the title role in Il Ritorno di Ulisse and Papageno (The Magic Flute). Recent operatic appearances have included baritone in staged performances of Britten’s War Requiem and Don Alfonso (ENO), Eugene Onegin (Garsington Opera), Billy Budd (Opera North and Aldeburgh Festival), Traveller and other roles in Death in Venice (WNO) and Balstrode in Peter Grimes (Bergen International Festival). He has performed with orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics under Simon Rattle, and was a guest soloist at the 2014 Last Night of the Proms. He appears regularly in recital, especially at London’s Wigmore Hall, and has made numerous recordings. In 2016 he received the RPS singer award and a BASCA composition award. His 2024/25 season engagements include Yeletsky in Pique Dame (Garsington), various recitals at Wigmore Hall and festival and concert appearances across Europe and the US.
