Biography

Simon Keenlyside appears at houses worldwide including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Bavarian State Opera and Vienna State Opera. Roles include Prospero (Adès’s The Tempest), Count Almaviva, Don Giovanni, Papageno, Eugene Onegin, Wozzeck, Hamlet, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Giorgio Germont, Posa, Ford, Amfortas and Rossini’s Figaro. Recent highlights include Rigoletto and Macbeth at Vienna State Opera, Peter Grimes at Paris Opera and Ford (Falstaff) at the Salzburg Festival. His recordings include American musical theatre numbers, Lieder by Schubert, Strauss and Brahms and Fauré and English songs with Malcolm Martineau; Schumann Lieder with Graham Johnson; and La bohème, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Billy Budd, Macbeth and a disc of arias, Tales of Opera. He was appointed a CBE in 2003 and received a knighthood in 2018. His 2024/25 season engagements include Peter Grimes (Teatro dell’Opera di Roma), Falstaff (Hamburg State Opera), Simon Boccanegra (Grange Park Opera) and La traviata (Bayerische Staatsoper).
