Biography

Italian-born conductor Speranza Scappucci is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York and the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome. Formerly Music Director of the Royal Opéra de Wallonie (2017–22), her recent highlights include Don Pasquale (Paris), La fille du régiment (Chicago), La traviata (Berlin), Gianni Schicchi, Cavalleria rusticana (Monaco), La rondine (New York), and Turandot (Washington). Additional recent engagements include I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Milan), La traviata (Barcelona), Lucia di Lammermoor (Zurich and Tokyo), Il barbiere di Siviglia and Macbeth (Toronto), Dialogues des Carmélites (Liège), La bohème (Zurich, Vienna, Dresden), Rigoletto (New York), L'elisir d'amore (Vienna), and Maria Stuarda (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées). Recordings include discs with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (Warner Classics, 2013), the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Opus Arte, 2016), and the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra (Deutsche Grammophon, 2019). Her 2024/25 season engagements include Madama Butterfly in Paris, Eugene Onegin in Toronto, and La traviata in Munich. She made her debut with The Royal Opera in the 2022/23 Season, leading a staged Attila, and in 2023, was appointed Principal Guest Conductor Designate of The Royal Opera, with plans to commence in the 2025/26 Season.
