Tobias Kratzer studied art history in Munich and Bern and opera directing at the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding. He first worked with designer Rainer Sellmaier in 2006 on La traviata (Munich Reaktorhalle); they have since collaborated on many productions. His recent opera work includes The Passenger (Bavarian State Opera), Moïse et Pharaon (Aix-en-Provence), Faust (Paris Opera), Tannhäuser (2019 Bayreuth Festival), Guillaume Tell (Opéra de Lyon), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Dutch National Opera), L’Africaine and La forza del destino (Frankfurt Opera), Der Zwerg (Deutsche Opera Berlin), The Raft of the Medusa (Komische Oper Berlin) and Lucio Silla (La Monnaie, Brussels). His awards include the Opernwelt Director of the Year (2020) and Production of the Year for Tannhäuser. 2024/25 Season highlights include the continuation of his Strauss cycle for Deutsche Oper Berlin and a new Ring cycle for Bavarian State Opera. From the 2025/26 Season he will take up the role of General Director at Hamburg State Opera.
