Biography

Chinese dancer Yu Hang joined The Royal Ballet’s Aud Jebsen Young Dancers Programme from the start of the 2018/19 Season and was promoted to Artist in 2019. Yu Hang was promoted to First Artist in 2023.

Yu Hang grew up in Shanghai and began her ballet training at age ten. She trained at Shanghai Dance School and The Royal Ballet School. 

Her awards include the Classical and Contemporary gold prize in The South Africa International Ballet Competition (2014), first place in The Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition (2015), the gold prize at the Hong Kong Canaan Star International Ballet Competition (2015), Prix de Lausanne prize winner (2016), Youth America Grand Prix gold Prize (2016) and Shanghai International Ballet Competition gold prize (2016). 

She joined the Royal Ballet Upper School on a Prix de Lausanne scholarship in 2016. Her roles while at the School included Concerto pas de deux at 2017’s Gala des Ecoles at the Palais Garnier, Paris. In the Royal Ballet School’s annual matinee roles in Larina Waltz by Ashley Page, Bach Multiplicity forms of Silence and Emptiness (excerpt) and Aurora in Aurora’s Wedding

Her professional engagements while at the School include dancing with The Royal Ballet in The Nutcracker, Manon, Giselle and Swan Lake. With the Company, her roles include Cygnet, Spanish Princess (Swan Lake), Juliet's Friend (Romeo and Juliet), Mirliton (The Nutcracker) and in Anemoi. She has created roles in Robert Binet's Dark with Excessive Bright.
