Story

The ballet dancer Matthew Ball is performing as Crown Prince Rudolf in The Royal Ballet’s production of Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling. He wears a white soldier's uniform with a red sash and there are medals on his chest. He is holding a pose in a lunging position with his arms stretched out to the shoulders of Mayara Magri who is performing as Countess Marie Larisch. One arm is stretched outwards, and the other is raised above her head, and she is en pointe. She is wearing a light blue satin and lace dress with a corset. The dress has black bows embroidered across from her right shoulder to her left leg.
Mayerling

Crown Prince Rudolf is tormented by dark obsessions, fixated by the idea of his own death. He cannot find solace in friends and family, except for one person: the young and beautiful Baroness Mary Vetsera. She too, shares his morbid interests. Stifled by the oppressive conventions and pageantry of the Austro-Hungarian court, Rudolf and Mary start meeting in secret. As fervent desire combines with a fascination for death, what begins as a clandestine love affair hurtles towards tragedy.
