An energetic remix of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland by hip hop company ZooNation.
ZooNation return to the Linbury Theatre as founder Kate Prince transforms Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland into a dysfunctional institution.
The Royal Ballet and ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company
The Queen of Hearts has anger issues, Alice is confused about just how big or small her body actually is. The Mad Hatter, suffering from mercury poisoning, never wants to stop having tea! Ernst has his work cut out for him at his new job. He is tasked to fix people who have been locked away for not being ‘normal’. As he gets closer to his patients, Ernst realises: what’s so great about being ‘normal’ anyway?
Choreographer and founder of ZooNation Kate Prince transforms Lewis Carroll’s traditional tale in this returning hit show. Set in a dysfunctional institution, this energetic family-friendly production encourages us to embrace our differences and the things that make us who we are.
Kate Prince worked with her frequent collaborators Josh Cohen and DJ Walde to create original music on top of the narrative. Together, they created a palette of music, incorporating various musical styles, artists and influences, with each character getting their own unique musical motif.
In Lewis Carroll’s story, for instance, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum have a battle over a rattle. In The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, this is reimagined as a B-Boy battle, a common practice in hip-hop culture. Breakbeats were used as the musical palette for these characters.
ZooNation was founded by Kate Prince in 2002 and is best known for creating full-length narrative dance productions strongly influenced by hip hop culture and music. They also run an extensive programme of talent development, working with different communities and young artists to increase their skills, knowledge and confidence in different styles of dance theatre.
Roles may be performed by different performers within the company – not all performers will perform in each show.
