Background

Explore the journey from early sketches to the final set. The 'Making of Cinderella' tour grants you rare access to the area immediately behind the Royal Opera House stage, where the scenery and props are cared for. Get an up-close look at the iconic pumpkin carriage and uncover the secrets behind the illusions that create the onstage magic.

Discover how props come to life as you explore backstage areas and learn how the Snow Fairy creates the magical snowfall. Peek into ballet rehearsal studios, hold one of Cinderella’s pointe shoes and see some of the Benesh notation from Ashton’s 1979 production to discover how The Royal Ballet preserves choreography for future generations. Snap a festive selfie on the iconic 'Bridge of Aspiration,' which links The Royal Ballet School to the Royal Opera House and enjoy stunning views of Floral Street below.

After your tour, relax on our Piazza terrace with a drink in a private area overlooking the vibrant Covent Garden Piazza. Choose from a selection of festive beverages, including house wine, single spirits, beer, and a range of soft drinks. As a special keepsake, take home a beautifully crafted gift from the Royal Ballet and Opera shop. Plus, your ticket includes a special offer code to access Royal Ballet and Opera Stream for just £1 for the first month, allowing you to relive the magic of Cinderella at home.

Access Information

This tour takes you through different areas of the Royal Opera House, including long corridors, stairs, escalators and lifts. The flooring is also different depending on where you are in the building – some floors are smooth and tiled or wooden, some are carpeted.

Because we are a working theatre, there are areas that won’t always be available to us, which means each tour will take a different route. The spaces we travel through can sometimes be busy and loud. Some routes may include views from a height.

Our tour guides use descriptive language which helps to paint a picture for blind and vision impaired visitors.

Please get in touch at boxoffice@roh.org.uk after booking to let us know your access requirements so we can make sure you have the best experience on your visit. We can help plan the tour if you require step-free and wheelchair access, if you prefer to avoid areas with views from a height, if you need to use the hearing loop or if you need to take regular breaks. Unfortunately, our hearing loops aren't compatible with Bluetooth.

A busy crowd is seated prior to a performance of Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House in the auditorium.
